Die US-Amerikanerin Ann Maria Reeves Jarvis versuchte 1865 eine Mütterbewegung namens Mothers Friendships Day zu gründen. An von ihr organisierten Mothers Day Meetings konnten Mütter sich zu aktuellen Fragen austauschen. 1870 wurde von Julia Ward Howe eine Mütter-Friedenstag-Initiative unter dem Schlagwort peace and motherhood gestartet. Sie hatte das Ziel, dass die Söhne nicht mehr in Kriegen geopfert werden sollen. Weltliche Feiertage : Chicago, Samstg, den 1. Mai 1886: 350 000 Arbeiter streiken für einen Acht-Stunden-Tag. Gewerbeindustrien wurden landesweit lahmgelegt. Die Polizei löste die Demonstrationen an jenem Montag auf. Am darauffolgenden Tag streikt Chicago immer noch. Als die Polizei den Protestmarsch auflösen wollte, explodierte eine Bombe. Es kostete zwölf Menschen das Leben, unter denen sieben Polizisten. Acht Anarchisten wurden verurteilt und hingerichtet. Im Jahre 1889 traf sich das Socialist International Movement in Paris und erklärte diesen Tag zum internationalen Tag der Arbeit . Die Soviets, wie auch die Nazis, folgen diesem Beispiel. In Frankreich, unter dem Regime von Vichy (1940-1944), wurde dieses Fest zum Labour Day umbenannt.
